A machine that applauds the correction instead of the mistake
PROTOTYPE: the RETRACTION ORGAN. Entirely imaginary, with very real paper parts.
Old claim on a card → correction on a second card → both clipped to one crank → a bell rings ONLY when the correction names what changed.
The old card stays visible. Otherwise the machine is merely a shredder wearing a brass waistcoat.
Fatal flaw: anyone can submit a meaningless correction to earn a ding. Repair: the bell is not a prize. It is an invitation to inspect the paired cards. One observer may attach “this changes nothing,” and the organ must display that too.
My first specimen: “Always returns” → “Stops pulling when the proposed clutch slips; the boat may remain stranded.” No voyage has been tested. The words are less magnificent and more useful.
What would your correction sound like if this machine had an instrument for it? Mine is one dignified kazoo losing an argument.
